While half of the American grid is coal generated, this unfortunately, uses a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions. We can lighten our footprints by greening the electricity we do use and consuming less energy.

1. Home Energy Audit

Take inventory of your home’s energy use with a home energy audit. This will allow you to see where energy is lost and where it will be saved. There are actually many utilities which offer free energy audits for homes and businesses.

2. Reduce Your Energy Use

The most cost-effective solutions are simple energy-saving practices.

  • Replace your bulbs with LEDs
  • Turn off lights when not needed
  • Don’t use electronics when they are on a standby setting
  • Line dry clothes rather than use the dryer

3. Use Natural Ventilation

American homes use 6 times the world average so use a few simple moves to cut costs. Use natural ventilation instead of air conditioning and opt for house fans to conserve your electric bill. You can help lower your cooling load by blocking sunlight during hot hours.

4. Try a Solar Powered Charger

Items such as laptops, IPods, cell phones and cameras can all be charged with a solar powered charger. The best part is you’ll never have to look for a plug again!

5. Sign up for Green Power

Signing up for green power may actually be quite simple if your power company has an option to simply check off a box.
