The more people we talk to the more we are seeing a trend of hybrid work models. Many office workers who used to commute to and from Boston are now working in a hybrid model where they go to the office only a few times a week (if at all). When the pandemic started over a year ago, many of us created makeshift offices in our homes. Laptops were placed on kitchen tables, people worked from the bedroom, and the family room was also a schoolroom. As more and more offices are making work from home permanent or semi-permanent it might be time to upgrade your home office. Here is an electrician’s guide to home office renovation:

Setting Up Your Home Office Computer Space

Many of the outlets in your home were never designed with the intention of running a full home office. Your outlets might be good for lamps or phone chargers, but if you and your spouse each have a computer, a one-two monitor, and other electronic devices, this can put a lot of electrical load through one outlet. Overloading your circuit could cause your circuit breaker to trip. Offices are built with routers, computers, monitors, and ethernet cables in mind. With the help of your local electrician, you can get a dedicated computer circuit for your home office. This will prevent circuit overload.

Hard-Wiring Your Internet Connection (Ethernet)

Another issue many homeowners run into is spotty internet. While their existing internet plan might work for streaming the latest Netflix documentaries, it might not work well for one or more people needing the internet from 9-5. Installing ethernet cable outlets can give you a direct hardline to your internet instead of relying on Wi-Fi. This can decrease video conference buffering, improve your security, and handle latency problems.

Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

If you have an older home, working from home might not be feasible without upgrading your system. During the winter and summer, your electrical system will need to not only support your lights, computer, and other electronics, it will also need to support heating and cooling. If you are noticing frequent surging in your home, or your breaker trips frequently, it may be time to upgrade your circuit breaker.
