Air conditioning is a must during the summer. But it can be very expensive. For families and businesses trying to save some cash from their electrical bill, here are a few tips to follow this summer to keep your a/c off as long as possible.
Turn Your A/C Low or Off At Night
If you are running your air conditioning unit all day, the best way to save money is to either turn your a/c lower or off right before you go to bed. Some air conditioning units actually have a sleep function built in where they either completely shut off after a pre-selected number of hours or they slowly lower their power output. If your unit does not have a sleep mode, try turning it off or turning the power to low right before bed. If you find that you can comfortably sleep with it off, you will save a lot of money by keeping it off for the 7-9 hours you are asleep.
Only Use The A/C In The Room You’re In
If you have portable or window air conditioners, try and only use your unit in the room you are working in. Keep doors shut and block the space under the door. It takes much less power to keep one room cool than your entire home. If you are out of the home, keep your units off. Your air conditioning units should not be running if no one is home.
Turn Off Lights & Stay Lower In Your Home
Scientifically, hot air rises and cold air falls. That is why basements tend to be cooler in the summer, and attics tend to be warmest. If you live in a home with multiple floors, spend more time on the lower floors to stay cooler. Another quick tip is to keep the lights off. All light bulbs give off heat, so keeping your lights off during the day will decrease your home’s internal temperature.
Clean Your Air Conditioner
Your air conditioning units have air filters. These need to be cleaned out to optimize power efficiency. Your unit will have to work harder if it is clogged or its filter is blocked. Make sure to clean all of your units before you install them at the beginning of the summer.
Upgrade Your System
New app-controlled thermostats and central air systems allow homeowners to save the most on their air conditioning by only using power when needed. Have a licensed and insured electrician in your area install the new system. With the new system installed, homeowners can control and manage their home’s temperature much easier.
