Most of us are probably aware that keeping your appliances or electronics plugged into the wall, even if not in use, still draws a bit of electricity. But the question is, how much? Is it significant enough that you should go through the hassle of unplugging every time? Some things, like a phone charger, may be easily accessible to plug in and unplug, every time. However, something like a gaming console might have multiple plugs in hard to reach places that make you wonder whether it’s worth it. We’re here to clear up some of the facts!

How Much Electricity Does it Draw

With so much of our daily lives depending on electricity, between appliances and electronics, it’s not uncommon that you have 20+ cords plugged in at all times. On average, appliances that constantly draw 1 watt of electrical current, adds up to $1 per year. (Hyrkas, 2014) Multiply this by the number of appliances you keep plugged in, and the typical family will waste about $100-200 every year. So if you’re trying to save on your energy spendings, the answer is clear- Unplug, turn off, and be mindful!

Start Unplugging

If you really start to think about all of the appliances and electronics in your home that are always plugged in, you’ll probably see the dollar signs flashing before your eyes. So where to start? Go room by room. In the kitchen, you can unplug the toaster, microwave, coffee pot, blender, and any other small appliances on the counter. In the bedroom, unplug your phone charger when it’s not in use, laptop, hair straightener, etc. In the living room, you’ll find some of the biggest culprits. Your entertainment center/gaming console draws a significant amount of energy when not in use. Aside from the energy that you’ll be saving by unplugging, you’ll also be protecting your devices from possible surge damage or electrical fires.

Invest in Power Strips

For something like your gaming console or other devices that have a lot of cords, it may be worth the investment to purchase power strips. That way, you only have to unplug one or two cords every time instead of 5-10. The easier you make it for yourself, the more likely you’ll be to make it a habit.

Turn Things Off

If unplugging is not an option, turning it off will undoubtedly help. Something like a computer, although it has a screen saver, is still drawing a significant amount of energy. If you have to leave it plugged in, at least turn off the monitor while you’re away.

Contact Cardoso Electrical

Saving energy is a goal for many, whether it be for economic or environmental reasons.
