Is your internet not fast enough? It might not be your network’s fault. Whether you own a small business or just want better upload and download speeds for your home, you should consider using ethernet cables. Although wifi is more convenient because it is wireless, ethernet cables provide a faster internet connection. Ethernet cables also reduce latency or the time it takes for traffic to get from a device to the internet. However, there are many different ethernet cables to choose from. That is why we have created this guide for getting the right cords.

Understanding CAT Ethernet Cables

You may notice when shopping in the technology department that most Ethernet cables are named CAT5e or CAT6. The term CAT simply stands for “category” and the numbers and letters that come after refer to the manufacturer specifications. Generally speaking, a higher number means a higher speed & a higher bandwidth. CAT3 and CAT5 cords are practically obsolete because they run at a speed of 10 megabytes per second to 100 megabytes per second. Most wifi modems will transmit a faster connection and will transmit it farther than a CAT3 or CAT5 wire. If you are using those wires, we recommend having them updated.

How To Choose The Right Ethernet Wire

It goes without saying, but better performing wires will cost more money. So like any purchase, you don’t want to over or under buy. The goal is to get the wire that is closest to the optimal performance you need without going over. If you are looking to get wires for an office building and there will be multiple wires running from the server room to many different computers, you will want shielded wires. Shielded wires limit crosstalk and interference that happens when wires sit close together. However, shielded wires are not necessary if you will be running a single wire for your home entertainment system.

Factors To Consider

Unfortunately, there is not a blanket statement for which ethernet cables you will need. There are many factors that need to be considered including, the length needed, internet provider, current modem setup, personal needs. There is no point in spending extra money on faster internet speed if you won’t notice the difference. Generally speaking, if you plan to use a single ethernet cable for your home computer, you are safe using CAT5e cables. If you need high speed and reliable internet for an office building you should consider using CAT7 cables.

To truly get the most out of your internet, you should have your ethernet cables designed with backbones by a professional electrician. At Cardoso Electrical Services we will find the correct wiring you need for your home or office. Having the right wires is the best way to optimize your budget and get the internet speeds you need.
