How to Prevent Rodents From Damaging Your Electrical Wires

Homeowners are well aware of the diseases that rodents can easily spread. Besides this, rodents often chew on everything which can be quite a nuisance. Many people forget that rodents such as mice can creep into the house and begin to chew on electrical wires.

Wires are covered in plastic insulation that protect the walls from the heat of the wire and helps the wires work better. Rodents can create nests around clusters of the wires by chewing through the insulation. Wires that heat up when used can catch on fire so check to see if the insulation is chewed or torn.

Two of the main concerns when it comes to mice or rats chewing through electrical wires are full blown electrical outages and blown breakers. If circuits in particular rooms are damaged, this may be pointing to a larger issue. Additionally, when insulation is stripped, wires can arc against surrounding materials.

Rats can squeeze into openings as small as a quarter inch thick. Hire a pest control company to examine your home so it can be completely secure from a rodent infestation. If you find that your wires have been chewed through by rodents, contact the professionals at Cardoso Electrical at 781-246-7700.
