How to Save Money on Air Conditioning

As soon as the summer sets in you will need to adjust the thermostat to offset the heat. You switch your HVAC to cool mode. While this can bring down the temperature indeed but it can raise your utility bills. There are ways to save money on air conditioning.

Selecting a Unit

You should select a unit for air conditioning for your home based on the size of your home and rooms. Bigger is not always better. Bigger units in small size rooms hit hard on your utility bills. A high-end more efficient unit may be costly but if you live in a hot climate the unit will pay its cost by reducing your electricity bills. Go for an AC unit that is suitable for the area you want to cool.

Close the blinds, Reduce Sunlight Exposure

During the summer you can decrease the temperature of your home by keeping the blinds closed. This is especially true when there is direct sunlight. Close the blinds around sunrise and sunset to decrease the need for your AC.

How to Decrease AC Needs by Using Fans

Even during extremely hot summer days, you may not need an AC running all day long. You should use your ceiling fans during early mornings or late evenings instead of AC. A ceiling fan can help circulate cool air throughout your home especially around morning and night.

Maintenance

You should regularly clean the filters, at beginning of each season. Make sure to check your unit’s wiring and look for any issues with your AC. Clean the unit thoroughly and remove any debris that can prevent the smooth flow of air.

AC Location

Make sure that the AC is in an optimal location for your home. If you use multiple units, make sure to strategically place them so they can effectively cool your home. Avoid putting anything on top of your AC units and make sure there is ample room for the air exhaust.

Reduce in-house appliance heat

You should avoid extra heat in the home which comes from cooking, dishwashing, and clothe washing machines. Running these appliances at night is the most effective way to decrease the need for AC cooling. Additionally purchasing new appliances can also decrease the need for AC.

Seal windows, doors

You should keep the doors and windows shut when running the AC. During AC use you can check if there’s any leakage of cool air by running fingers along with the windows and doors. In case of any leakage plug the outlet to retain cool air.
