Saving money is on everyone’s mind, especially in the summertime. As the temperature climbs, so do your power bills. There are a few ways you can go about cutting corners this summer season, however, and a few of them may be easier than you think! Check out a few of our tips below.

Beware of Vampire Power

Have you ever heard the term “vampire power”? If not, the term refers to the energy that electronics and appliances drain from your home even if they’ve been turned off. What “off” should really mean is “unplugged”. If anything in your home has a clock or light display that is on while the device is technically “off”, then that’s a sign of a vampire device. To avoid certain devices using electricity for 24 hours a day, hook them up to a surge protector. This way, you can power devices on and off with a flick of the switch on the surge protector. This’ll also keep you from having to unplug and re-plug essential devices. If the surge protector switch is off, there’s no power for the devices to drain.

Program Your Thermostat

If you have a thermostat at home, ensure you know how to use it so that it can do the most for your home and your electric bill. The best thing to do here is getting out the booklet for your thermostat and give it a read. Once you have it correctly set up, a programmable thermostat can save you up to 10 percent a year on cooling and heating bills. Save yourself some money on cooling bills this year and program your thermostat.

Don’t Make Your Home an Arctic Tundra

We get it; it’s hot in the summer. The desire to make your home as cold as possible is definitely real but that doesn’t mean you should do it. To give your energy bill some much-needed rest, keep your air conditioning set to a practical temperature. Also, if the nighttime is slated to be relatively cool, open up the windows instead of turning to the AC. Cool showers can also help if you’re in dire need of a cool down.

Follow these tips and you’ll likely see a decrease in your overall summer utility bills. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always contact us here at Cardoso Electrical. You can reach us at 781-246-7700!
