Preparing Your Hot Tub for Colder Months

hot tub in winterDuring the months of October and November, homeowners are beginning to prep their hot tubs for the winter. Since freezing temperatures can severely affect electronics and plumbing, the water in the dark corners of the hot tub can freeze and expand which damages other components.

First, shut off the heater and disconnect the power to the spa. You’ll then want to flush the plumbing system with a cleaner, but the cover must be off. Depending on the type of hot tub you own, use the drain or a hookup/hose/pump.

Once the hot tub is clear of water, the tub and sub-systems where the filters are must be thoroughly cleaned. Hose them off or clean with a soaking solution. It’s crucial to never store a dirty filter because the grime can severely damage the filter.

Water in the fittings between the pipes can expand and destroy them so it’s important to loosen them. This way, the fittings have wiggle room if water drips in. Also, blow air through the jets to get rid of any water or debris. This can be done with a vacuum set to blower mode or with a fan.

Prepare for the final drying and closing down process, clean the outer shell of the hot tub. By covering the hot tub and sealing the cover, you can easily prevent debris from getting in.
