What is Sustainable Lighting?

To simplify it, sustainable lighting includes lighting methods that are more energy-efficient and have less of an impact on the environment. The goal of sustainability is to reduce the amount of energy used and therefore reducing our effect on the planet. In this guide, we will discuss different forms of sustainable lighting that you can incorporate into your home to do your part in reducing energy use.

Take Advantage of Natural Lighting

If you’re able to, design your home to take advantage of natural lighting so you can reduce the amount of artificial light you are using. Skylights are a great option for any room while large windows are perfect for living rooms and bedrooms and are best for maximizing the amount of sunlight you’re able to get into your home. If this is not possible, be sure to keep your shades up and curtains open during the daytime to soak up the natural light during the daytime.

Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs

Because using unnatural light is inevitable, millions of dollars have been poured into the development and creation of sustainable options, such as bulbs. In regular (incandescent) bulbs, only 10% of the energy is converted into light while the remainder is wasted on heat. Energy-efficient alternatives use most of their energy on creating light and also last longer than incandescent bulbs.

LED Lighting

Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, are lit by moving electrons in a semiconductor material while electricity passes through. LEDs have gained popularity not only because they are sustainable, but because they last significantly longer than incandescent alternatives, often for several years. LED is one of the newer forms of sustainable lighting and continues to be one of the focuses in the lighting technology sector.
