5 Tips for Downsizing to a Smaller House

Downsizing No matter what the circumstance is, when you downsize to a smaller home, you will have to say goodbye to some of your favorite items, keepsakes, and yes, even clothing! Are you stressed and worried about the process? It’s completely normal to feel these emotions, but you don’t have to. Follow these tips to make the process a little bit easier!

TIP ONE: RECYCLE, REUSE, DONATE, SELL

Don’t throw any of your stuff away, instead hire a junk removal company and they will recycle it for you or you can donate it, sell it, or even do a DIY on it to make the item more functional and fit into your new space easier. Are there items you absolutely love but know you don’t use them? Donate them to a local charity or sell them at a consignment shop – someone will buy the item and give it the TLC it deserves.

TIP TWO: GET AN OBJECTIVE OPINION

It’s hard to keep an objective opinion when it comes to your own personal items so bringing someone in with a completely objective opinion about what you realistically should keep and what you shouldn’t, makes the process that much easier. Keep in mind that they’re thinking in your best interest as well, and you wanted their objective opinion for a reason!

TIP THREE: PLAN AHEAD

Moving is a longer (and tiring!) process. Plan ahead to get rid of pesky issues early on in the process. Keep in mind the dimensions of the rooms in your new house and what furniture will realistically fit in them. The items you know won’t fit or the items you have to cram into the space, are ones you shouldn’t keep. In this instance, it’s important to think of this ahead of time because then you don’t have to worry about moving it to your new place!

TIP FOUR: QUALITY & MULTIPURPOSE ITEMS

Let’s face it: you’re going to be living in a much smaller space than you currently live in. The best types of pieces for smaller spaces are one that have multiple purposes. That extra chair you just had to have because it was pretty doesn’t serve as good of a purpose as a coffee table that has storage and raises up to regular table height. In this circumstance, you have storage, a coffee table for gatherings, and an extra study/workspace.

TIP FIVE: STAY ORGANIZED & COLOR CODE

During the moving process, boxed get mixed up and stacked up high and items end up going missing. When you begin the packing process, color code and mark all of your boxes so you and your movers know where each box belongs in your new space. This will also make unpacking easier and finding items you need in the meantime.
