Lawn Care Tips for Fall
Fall is officially here and it’s to prep your yard for the long, cold winter ahead while the weather is still decent. Not sure where to start when it comes to your lawn? Here are some tips for keeping your lawn in tip-top shape and ensure you’re greeted with green grass come spring.
1. Mulch Your Leaves
Do you absolutely hate raking the hundreds of thousands of leaves that fall from the trees every fall? We get it! It can be a hassle but avoiding the task will block the sunlight that is vital to keeping your grass alive and will cause it to thin over the long, cold winter months. Don’t want to rake them up? Mulch them with your lawn mower before applying fertilizer to help the leaves break down faster.
2. Fertilize Your Lawn
Fertilizing your lawn twice during the fall season will be the difference between a good lawn and a great lawn. Aim to have a 6-week period between each fertilizing with your first feeding early in the season. These feedings will help rebuild the grass roots that were damaged during the summer months.
3. Mow Your Lawn Shorter
During the fall months, start mowing your lawn less frequently and at 1-2 inches shorter than normal to help generate grass regrowth once spring rolls around. Your grass will stop growing late fall, so don’t plan on doing any mowing in November!
4. Put Away Outdoor Furniture
Have any outdoor furniture that you love? Plan to move in into storage for the winter! This will not only help protect your grass from the extra pressure but will also expand the lifespan of the furniture. If you don’t have any way of storing them, purchase weather protective covers to help reduce damage from outdoor elements over the cold winter months.
5. Get Rid of Junk
The summer months are busy and junk piles up, especially when old tools and machinery stop working. Before the snow starts falling, schedule a time for your local junk removal company to come and remove these items for you. The longer the junk sits, the bigger the damage will be to your lawn!
