Porcelain veneers are a compilation of many layers of thin ceramic that can replace the original enamel of your tooth and an adhesive layer. For the dentist to place a veneer, there must be a very tiny amount of the original tooth enamel taken off, usually even less than a millimeter. It is necessary because it gives room for the veneer to fit and to most accurately restore the tooth function while providing an even more beautiful appearance.

The bond that is between the porcelain veneer and the original tooth is critical because it gives you the visual perfection you desire and a strong bond essential for proper veneer functioning. The resin is light sensitive and placed between the veneer and the original tooth, and the hardening takes place by using a special light for curing.

Porcelain veneers seem to be the successful option in many situations if your original tooth has become poor shaped, poor color, or has contours. It has become an excellent choice for using the teeth gaps, fractured teeth, and there are in some situations if the tooth position is compromised, and there might be minor issues that are bite-related. Some people find that superficial stains will not respond well to bleaching or tooth whitening. If this is the situation, a veneer might be the best option.

No-prep Or Prep Veneers

There are some who are looking for another method for traditional veneers or if you will, tooth bonding; this treatment is not the right one for just anyone.

It is like with porcelain veneers; it is basically “no-prep” or maybe a minimal-prep veneer that is called such since it does not require your dentist to remove much tooth enamel that is bonded on the front part of your teeth. The placement of the no-prep veneers can be performed with less discomfort and done more quickly than the traditional veneers.

Your dentist will be able to tell you if your teeth will be good for the “no-prep” veneers and if it makes a sensible treatment plan.

Benefits Of Porcelain Veneers

Because Dental veneers are sculpted individually for each patient, it is almost impossible to tell between a natural tooth or a veneer. It is not like a natural tooth/teeth, a custom-made veneer will resist tea and coffee stains, and cigarette smoke due to the material that they are made.

With the veneers – instead of crowns – your real teeth will remain mostly intact with a minimum amount having to be altered to fit the veneer.

The teeth that want to defy whitening, veneers can get rid of some of the darkest teeth and make them bright white.

Dentists will sometimes recommend veneers for a quick fix for overlaps, small gaps, and minor twists.

Potential Veneer Downsides

Since there is a portion of your original tooth enamel that has been reduced, a veneer is not reversible. Adjustments and new Dental Veneers can be designed, but you could never go back to the original tooth.

Once your porcelain veneers have been attached, you will notice some sensitivity to cold and hot temps due to the removal of the thin layer of enamel. It will usually disappear in a few days.

When the veneers are in a healthy mouth, and they are properly treated, and all destructive forces have been eliminated or at least minimized, the patient should be able to eat and use his/her porcelain veneers just as he would with his/her natural teeth.

Veneers are solid, but also brittle. You need to stay away from the same stresses you would normally avoid with any non-veneered teeth like do not bite your nails, open any beer bottles by using your teeth, or chew ice.

Maintenance Of A Veneer

To maintain porcelain veneers is simple. Treat them like you do your teeth, routine flossing and brushing. Don’t use abrasive fluoride toothpaste.

Seven days after you get your veneers placed, you will need to go back to the dentist for your follow up a visit to see how the veneers are settling in your mouth.

If you usually grind your teeth, the dentist might decide to fit you with a bite guard to wear at night so you will not damage your new veneers.

You will need to return for professional maintenance since veneers need to be polished with a special formulated, non-abrasive paste, and your dentist needs to check how your veneers are progressing.
