About Soft Tissue Grafting

Soft tissue grafting, commonly known as gum grafting and gingival grafting is a periodontal procedure which involves using grafting material (either taken from the patient or synthetic) to improve the appearance, health, and function of soft tissues within the mouth. Your dentist will attach the new material to the problem area, allowing it to properly heal, altering the appearance and shape of your gums.

Why Soft Tissue Grafting?

Soft tissue grafting may be recommended in a variety of situations. For patients who experience periodontal disease, receding gums or even just uneven tissue, soft tissue grafting can be an excellent choice. When tooth roots are exposed, it can cause sensitivity and pain. Receding gums can allow bacteria and plaque into the gum line, resulting in infections and periodontal disease. Following a soft tissue graft, the patient’s gums will be more healthy, functional and attractive.

Undergoing Soft Tissue Grafting

During soft tissue grafting, the material is usually taken from another part of the patient’s mouth. The material is then attached to the problem area. Additional tissue-stimulating treatments may be applied prior to receiving stitches, allowing the area to heal more quickly.
